Geography

In the Aegean Sea, Tilos is a tiny island and municipality in Greece. Midway between Kos and Rhodes, it is an island in the Dodecanese group and it includes the uninhabited offshore islands of Antitilos and Gaidaros. Tilos makes up a part of the Rhodes regional unit.

Climate in Tilos

It is most probable that you will have lovely days with average temperatures between 20 and 25°C throughout the months of April and May; and October and November. The warmest months of the year are June, July, August, and September. So while the summer months tend to be the peak tourist season, we actually recommend visiting in the shoulder months as you will get both excellent weather and reasonably-priced accommodation and flights.

Culture

Telos was the son of Helios and Halia, the sister of the Telchines, according to urban legend. Apollo and Neptune temples were built on the island when he went there in quest of herbs to treat his mother's illness. Interestingly, Telos does not exist in Greek mythology, which suggests that the word has a prehistoric origin. Telos was known as Agathussa in ancient times, according to Pliny the Elder. In the Middle Ages, the Italians referred to it as Episcopio, possibly because it was a bishop's seat or because of its vantage point. The island has also been referred to as lyaki (Turkish) and Piscopi (modern Italian).

Explore the Charkadio Cave

The intriguing Charkadio Cave is located in the centre of Tilos, 2 kilometres south of Megalo Chorio. Excavations at the site in 1971 yielded the first fossilised teeth of miniature elephants, which frequented the island until roughly 4,000 years ago. Further digs uncovered Neolithic hunting equipment, earthenware, and deer and turtle remains. These artefacts, as well as some sketches and pictures from the dig site, are on exhibit in Tilos' Paleontological Collection. A visit to the Charkadio Cave should be high on your list of things to do in Tilos.

Visit the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon

The Monastery of Agios Panteleimon, also known as Saint Panteleimon, is situated on the slope of Kryallos Hill, 7 kilometres west of Megalo Chorio. The fortified monastery was built between 1470 and 1480, and it was renovated between 1703 and 1912. On the southeast, there is a three-story defence tower. The hagiographies dating back to the 15th century, including that of the monastery's founder, will leave an impression on you. The wall murals and wooden iconostasis are very noteworthy. Every year on July 27th, Saint Panteleimon's Day is observed here. During the two-day event, you may enjoy local music and traditional cuisine.

Make a trip to the village of Mikro Chorio

The remains of the lovely abandoned town of Mikro Chorio draw a large number of visitors. Previously, some 700 people lived here, but today all that remains are a few ruined and well-preserved dwellings. You may go on a nice trek from Livadia to Mikro Chorio, then back to Livadia. It will take roughly 4 to 5 hours to get there. The most intriguing aspect of this establishment, though, is the bar, which opens at 11 p.m. every day throughout the summer. You'll enjoy your drink even more when the neighbouring abandoned buildings are lit up at night, creating a lovely atmosphere.

Tilos features a few restaurants and tavernas that provide traditional Greek food. Here are some of our recommendations for a fantastic eating experience. Filoxenia, located near the bay of Livadia, is a family-run establishment that distinguishes out for its outstanding hospitality and home-grown fruits and vegetables. The zucchini flower fritters are delicious. Following that, you may unwind on the beach on their deckchairs while admiring the breathtaking views of the sea. Armenon is a little more expensive, but it offers an exceptional wine selection that is much sought after. You'll like the handmade recipes. Kastro, located in the heart of Megalo Chorio, provides classic Greek cuisine, and the children's menu will not disappoint either. Try the fried anchovies, baked veggies, and other menu favourites. Airport

Tilos does not have an airport, however Rhodes “Diagoras” International Airport (RHO) is the closest one so you can fly here and catch a direct ferry to Tilos.

Getting Around Tilos

Tilos has ferry connections with Athens, Rhodes and Kos. There is a bus that links almost every settlement on Tilos, however, it isn't very timely. To see the island at your own leisure and go to the most remote locations, hire a vehicle or motorbike. Near the harbour, you'll find many car hire firms. Alternatively, you may also hail cabs but be aware that they may be quite pricey.
