Guide to Newcaste

Geography

Located at the mouth of the Hunter River, Newcastle is situated within the Australian state of New South Wales.

Climate in Newcastle

Newcastle experiences a humid subtropical climate, like much of the Australian east coast. Summers are typically warm and humid and rainfall is highest during late autumn and early winter.

Culture

Originally known as Malubimba, present-day Newcastle was inhabited by the Aboriginal Awabakal and Worimi people before the arrival of the European settlers.

Things to do in Newcaste

Sled some giant sand dunes

Stroll along the 32-kilometre-long Stockton Beach, one of the largest beaches in the state. It boasts the largest sand dunes in the entire southern hemisphere, some of which can reach 30 metres high. You can sled or sandboard them, or try to spot a shipwreck along the coastline. Stockton Beach is located just north of Hunter River and is easily accessible by car from Newcastle.

Swim in a naturally-formed ocean pool

FFrom the desert-like atmosphere at Stockton Beach, make your way to Nobby’s Beach down Newcastle’s coast (all the beaches are connected!). Descend down a narrow cliffside staircase to reach the Bogey Hole, a naturally-formed ocean pool. During low tide, it can be a blissfully relaxed experience to take a dip in these pools but do take caution during high tide as the ocean currents can be quite strong.

Eating out in Newcaste

Pay a visit to Paymaster’s Restaurant for a quirky and eclectic dining experience while enjoying sublime terrace views over the ocean. Their weekend brunches are somewhat of an institution among the locals. For an upscale, fine-dining experience, Restaurant Mason serves modern Australian cuisine in a posh ambience with gilt mirrors. In contrast, The Happy Wombat might be a better option if you’re looking for someplace with a more casual and laid-back vibe. They offer international share plates and craft beer flights.

Newcaste Transport

Airport

The closest airport is Newcastle Airport (NTL), located about 15 nautical kilometres north of Newcastle’s city centre.

Getting around Newcastle

There are several public transit options in Newcastle. Numerous operators provide bus services within the city as well as connecting it to other major destinations in the state and country. Road transport is also popular among both locals and visitors for the freedom and flexibility it offers. Newcastle is connected to surrounding cities by the Pacific Motorway, Hunter Expressway, New England Highway, and Pacific Highway.
